Here at Social City, we love to support and learn from our fellow girl bosses. To celebrate Galentine’s Day coming up this week, we’ve created our must-have list of girl boss books you need to read right now.
For the Self-Help Junkie
Nothing inspires our team quite like a healthy dose of self-improvement; but with the influx of self-help books on the market, it can feel like an overwhelming tidal wave of advice. One of our favourite books in recent months has been Help Me! by Marianne Power. Marianne’s honest and, sometimes painful, experiment to live wholeheartedly by self-help advice is not only an entertaining read but a critical guide for self-reflection. Marianne’s book inspired our team to strive for progress, not perfection and helped to address some hard truths about mental and financial health. We love this book for the conversation it inspired.
For the Classic GirlBoss
In today’s day and age, it is difficult to find a tried-and-true GirlBoss handbook that not only inspires but also stands the test of time, technology and entrepreneurial spirit. The Gutsy Girl Handbook by Kate White is one of those rare books. Originally written in 1995, this book has been continuously updated and revised to include new advice and strategies for women in any field and at any stage in their professional careers. The author, Kate White, was the former Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan magazine (from 1998-2012) before leaving to publish a number of bestselling novels. In other words, she is ultimate GirlBoss goals.
For the Girl Looking For Her Passion Project
This one is for our true crime junkies and podcast lovers out there! In early 2016, true crime fanatics and friends Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff teamed up to create My Favourite Murder - a true crime comedy podcast. Since then, the ladies have left their full-time careers, continue to tour around the world to host live shows and have recently created their own podcast network. Their first book, Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered, recounts the ladies’ hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking past, and shows how a small passion project grew into a new wave entertainment movement. If you’ve ever felt alone in your passions or goals, this book is for you!
For the Newbie
For the fledgling girl boss, our favourite recommendation is the You Are A Bad Ass series by Jen Sincero. These books help readers identify self-sabotaging behaviours, move beyond fear and set (and accomplish!) some big goals. These easy reads are perfect for any girl boss who needs a bit of hard truth paired with hilarious analogies and stories of personal triumph. For an extra dose of inspiration, we recommend listening to these books as audiobooks to kick start your day!
For the Entrepreneur
Inspired by our fearless leader Kaitlyn, our team loves to deconstruct the growing force that is female entrepreneurs. Girl Code: Unlocking the Secrets to Success, Sanity and Happiness for the Female Entrepreneur by Cara Alwill Leyba is an honest reflection of what happens behind the scenes of many female entrepreneurs - the hustle, the imperfections and the messy truths. We loved the stories shared by the women in this book and the way Cara Alwill Leyba pulls back the curtains on the celebrations, and hard failures, of some of the most inspiring female entrepreneurs.
